At the Lunatics' Tower (e, center) in Viena, a remarkable collection of strange instruments and fetters were  employed in the treatment of the insane. (a) A lunatic in hood and straitjacket, padlocked to a cell hall. (b) The machine in which lunatics were swung until they were in a state of stupefaction and therefore remained quiet. (c) A maniac strapped in a chair in a position sometimes held for weeks. (d) The "English coffin", "in together resembled a standing clock, (f) A cell door with its iron "spy hole". (g) An enormous wheel, which turned each time the lunatic inside it moved. (h) A maniac's hands in padlocked, and (i) Another straitjacket lunatic.
